Raising a Child on the Autism Spectrum: Insights From Parents to Parents

by Mallory Griffith MA CCC-SLP , Rachel Bédard Ph.D.

From Rachel Bedard, PhD:

“If you are raising a child with Autism, or know a person with Autism (and, honestly, isn't that ALL of us?), this book is for you! Packed with insights from parents, this book will make you laugh, cry, and then love folks with autism more fiercely!

This book was the product of too much time on our hands and a couple of snowy days.  A parent asked us, "Are you writing a book?"  We were not, in fact, even thinking of writing a book.  Flash forward three weeks, and a plan was hatched. We really think the parents have the insights and hard earned wisdom - not us!

Those days when parenting on the spectrum seems too hard, this book is your friend. The days you don't want to explain yourself, you just want to be in the community of autism parents, this book is for you!

The parents in the book talk about their best days, their worst days, their hopes and dreams for the future.  They are honest, raw, and funny. But also, there are a couple of real tear jerkers in there, so maybe grab some tissues...or wine. Happy reading!!

Reviews

Raising a Child on the Autism Spectrum is ideal for parents of a newly diagnosed young child. Parents of young adults on the spectrum share their experiences, feelings, and insights into raising their children. Dr. Temple Grandin, author “The Way I see It” and “The Autistic Brain”

Fort those raising a child on the autism spectrum, the honest collection of stories will show you that you do not walk this path alone. Those who work with the families are provided honest insight into the celebrations and struggles experienced along the path of raising a child on the autism spectrum. Julie Clark, author, “Asperger’s in Pink”

I loved reading this book. The authors have compiled accounts from 24 parents of individuals on the autism spectrum beautifully and truthfully answering eight poignant questions about their experiences. The questions include such topics as difficulties with diagnosis, telling your child about their diagnosis, and what parents wish someone had told them early in their journey. As a professional who has known, worked with, and cared for more than 100 families over 40 years, I would recommend this book to anyone living with or working with a child or adult on the spectrum. The stories enlighten and educate. They inspire and encourage. The book is very engaging and reads quickly, which makes it perfect for sharing with extended family members. It can also be used in parent groups, education courses, and other opportunities designed to increase the insight and understanding needed to effectively support families. I will definitely recommend it! Kari Dunn Buron, Autism Education Specialist, Author “The Incredible 5 Point Scale”
